Clinton County, PA Republican Party

WHO WE ARE

ABOUT THE CLINTON COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY

The Clinton County Republican Party, also known as the GOP (Grand Old Party), is dedicated to advancing the principles of the Republican Party. Through grassroots outreach and community engagement, we support and elect Republican candidates who uphold our party’s values at the local, county, state, and national levels. We focus on registering new voters, keeping our community informed about important issues, and encouraging active civic participation. In partnership with the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, the Republican National Committee, and local municipal and grassroots organizations, we work to strengthen our organization and promote the election of well-qualified candidates.

Clinton County has 33 voting precincts from it’s 20 townships, 7 boroughs, and the City of Lock Haven.

The national Republican Party was founded in 1854 when former members of the Whig Party established a new party to oppose the spread of slavery into the western states and territories of the United States of America.

WHY THE ELEPHANT

Thomas Nast, the father of the modern political cartoon, used an elephant to represent the Republican Party in an 1874 issue of Harper’s Weekly. In the cartoon, the elephant was labeled as “the Republican vote,” shown standing at the edge of a pit. The elephant was employed to represent Republicans in subsequent cartoons during the 1870s. By 1880, other cartoonists were using it to symbolize the party.
